Restaurants

Zinzi Restaurant

Zinzi Restaurant is an African Inspired restaurant on the Hunter’s Estate. Designed by Paul Oosthuizen it is an open space overlooking the dam.

It has drawn inspiration from Nomadic African style, with textured concrete walls, screeded floors, beautiful antique Zanzibari doors and windows. The interiors are simple- Indian style tables and chairs upholstered in nomadic Suzani style handprinted textiles in natural tones.. Large antique tables with bench style dining and oversized chairs as well as low tables and handcrafted leather pouffes on Indian grinding wheels for relaxed interactive dining.

The menu in keeping is styled around African Meze, wholesome fresh South African meals using seasonal locally sourced produce, fresh salads, hearty tagines and a good selection of our best Cape wines.
I worked on this project over 10 years ago and the style is still fresh , contemporary and appropriate.

Again in its conception I was involved in all aspects – from the interiors, to the menus, uniforms, crockery and cutlery and general styling.

Thirty Ate at the Granddaddy

Having been commissioned to do one of the famous rooftop airstream caravans at the Granddaddy- done to the theme of Gold Rush it was with glee I accepted the task of renovating the restaurant.

Inspired by the existing gorgeous copper Tom Dixon lamps in the restaurant and wanting to bring in some texture, light, fun and a possibility for different dining experiences we set to work to create an ambient restaurant with soul. A copper wall installed to create a warmth and define the area, as well as a copper clad reception. We wanted it to be earthy- to give the copper more of a rustic yet glam feel- so used visible rivets to join panels. The central pillars were clad with re-purposed scaffolding, mid-century chairs designed and made in midnight blue with copper accents yet retaining the natural wood feel.

Higher tables and stools were placed in areas for a quick coffee, breakfast or tapas with a craft beer and the remaining tables were placed to create more personal spaces for dining. The entire design was mindful at all times of the essence of the Granddaddy building, retaining the classic historical look, while updating it with a bit of fun and humour. And again always mindful of the guest experience.
