I was approached by the owners of a property in Rwanda to conceptualise the guest experience for a lodge. 2 restaurants, beach bar, villa, spa and 14 suites.
The lodge is in a beautiful location on the banks of the splendid lake Kivu. It was an interesting project and I loved travelling to Rwanda. I sourced extensively in Rwanda and in Kenya and discovered so much talent in both countries.
My inspiration was from the lake- as well as the beautiful indigo dyed Adire textiles. I wanted light handmade furniture that accentuated the beautiful solid wooden floors and stone clad walls. Simple with a contemporary edge. The hero would be the lake.
I conceptualised the guest experience- with a dining area on the deck that was both relaxed and sophisticated – overlooking the lake- with options for dining at tables, in soft low seats or cocktail style.
The spa had some eastern influence- with Japanese sliding doors to separate areas, a water feature running over the rock face being the hero and a massive sauna and rain shower overlooking the lake.
The Villa- ultimate contemporary chic- African style with beautiful Rwandan made basketry art installation under the stairwell, texture colour and some glamour,
I worked with an artist and architect friend on the beach bar- which to me would be the ultimate selling point of the lodge as this is where guests would spend most of their time.
A barefoot luxury feel- simple thatched and woven structures- with nests along the shore for private dining. A truly African experience with an emphasis on food cooked on a fire, fabulous cocktails and ultimate relaxation.
I was very disappointed not to see the project become a reality- as there were some changes in management and direction and I decided not to continue. I did however get to experience this fantastic country and meet some lovely people as well as do all of the ground work for any future projects in the area.
Imagenius Interiors owns all concepts so I would love to apply the deigns to another project- let me know if you are interested.
